Spinel
Spinel takes its name from the fact that it grows in spines or thorns after the Latin word spina meaning little thorn. It is found in a variety of colours due to various impurities, red spinel is coloured by chromium and iron and is the most popular, for many years it was believed to be a type of ruby, blue spinel is coloured by iron and less commonly cobalt. It forms in granites and metamorphic rocks. It can be found in India, Canada, Sri Lanka, Burma, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Brazil, Australia, Turkey, Italy and Myanmar.
